In Region 4-B, families of an engineer and sea captain declared winners of 2014 Regional Model OFW Families of the Year Puerto Princesa City, Palawan—The MIMAROPA region is proud to send two of its outstanding OFW families to compete for the national Model OFW family of the Year Awards this year. This was the report of Allan Ignacio, Director, Regional Welfare Office No. 4-B of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz after the board of judges of the 2014 Regional model OFW Families of the Year Award adjudged the family of Engr. Andrew Cayetano and the family of Capt. Bartolome Cadavero as the as runaway winners in the land-based and sea-based category, respectively, of the Awards held during the awarding ceremony held at the La Chari’ca Inn and Suites in this city end of last month. “These two families really deserve the Awards and they should do very well in the national competition,” said Director Ignacio in his report coursed through OWWA Administrator Rebecca Calzado. “They will represent the MIMAROPA in competition for the land-based and sea-based categories in the 2014 National Search for the Model OFW Family of the Year Awards which will be held on 4 December 2014,” Ignacio added. OWWA MIMAROPA’s Aquilina C. Tarrobago, on behalf of Dir. Ignacio, and Richard Rebote, Palawan Provincial PESO manager, handed the plaques of recognition to the regional winners, who were represented by members of their families as Engr. Cayeteno was in Manila during the awarding to attend to his employment documents. Capt. Cadavero, on the other hand, is on-board and will not be back until December, hopefully in time for the national MOFYA Awards. Engr. Cayeteno and his family hail from Roxas, Palawan. The family was selected for having shown their dedication to assist the people of Roxas by providing many jobseekers in the town overseas employment opportunities. Capt. Cadavero, a seafarer, and his family come from Puerto Princesa City, and have supported campaigns to uplift the lives of their community through the conduct of various socio-civic activities. Now on its 10th year, the Model OFW family of the Year Awards (MOFYA) is an annual institutional event of the OWWA that seeks to recognize exemplary OFW families. “MOFYA winners mirror stable Filipino family values in their financial and professional achievements and community involvement efforts. Through the MOFYA, we honor their achievements, exemplary family values, and their significant contributions to their respective communities,” said Secretary Baldoz. MOFYA contenders are selected on the basis of the following criteria: (a) wholesome OFW family (50 percent); (b) civic and community involvement (20 percent); (c) success in education and profession (20 percent); and (d) success in managing family finances (10 percent). Ignacio reported that past national winners of the MOFYA, namely OFW Oscar De Jesus and family (2007) and OFW Victor dela Cruz and family (2010), were both from Region IV-B. END/ Jan Erwin D.
