DOLE looks into complaint vs. unlicensed recruiter for Australia

Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz yesterday assured the father of a female would-be overseas Filipino worker (OFW) planning to work in Australia as a nurse that the DOLE is looking into his complaint about a consultancy company that had enticed her to apply for a job even though it is unlicensed.

“A parent, Mr. Gabriel Padilla, wrote informing me that a company, Philippine Management, Inc., is enticing Filipino registered nurses to apply for nursing positions in Australia, with a promise of P2.5 million in annual earnings and financial assistance for those who will apply,” Baldoz said.

As a matter of due process, she said she referred the matter to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), particularly its Legal Assistance Division, for appropriate investigation and response.

In his letter, Mr. Padilla said Philippine Management, Inc., formerly Canadian Consultancy, Inc., is distributing flyers saying 14,000 registered nurses are needed in Australia. Its office is at the Philippine Stock Exchange Building in Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

The labor and employment chief made it clear there are no existent job orders from the Australian labor market for Filipino nurses.

Thus, she advised and warned Filipino nurses intending to go to Australia to be wary and avoid any rackets or scams of unscrupulous persons and phony recruiters claiming to recruit nurses for the overseas destination.

“Would-be nurses and other workers must check first with the POEA on job orders for Australia, or risk falling victims to illegal recruiters and human traffickers,” said Baldoz.

A check with the POEA’s official website’s (www.poea.gov.ph) Status of Recruitment Agencies, showed “0 agency/ies found with names having the word, “Philippine Management, Inc.”, which indicates that no such firm name is in the roster of POEA licensed overseas recruitment industries.

Nonetheless, there is a website accessible at the URL www.philmanagementinc.com, which claims that they are a “Philippine-organized and registered corporation with the Securities and Exchange Commission.”
